Ladakh

The
Land of Passes and the last Shangri- la are names that have been use to describe
Ladakhs remote beauty. On the northern slopes of the Himalayas Ladakh is situated
on Tibetan Platue, and was once a part of Tibet. Ladakh, shares much of its
history, culture and religion with Tibet, and has become home to many Tibetans
and is sometimes referred to as Little Tibet. Leh, the capital of Ladakh,
was a major trading center, being at the cross roads of the most important trade
routes that crossed the Himalayas.
The Great Himalayan Range acts as a barrier to rain clouds, only a few creep across their awesome height. As a result Ladakhs landscape has barren beauty beyond belief. Only where rivers, running from faraway glaciers or melting snow, carry water to habitation do you find plant life hence it is sometimes called Moon-land.
Ladakh could well be a last Shangri-la, as it was closed to outside visitors
until 1974 and its isolation from the rest of India gives it an almost mystical
aura. Traveling by road is only possible from June to October as the roads into
Ladakh from Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh are covered by snow the rest of the
year. There is now a daily flight to Leh. it is one of the most spectacular
in the world.
Ladakh has an otherworldly feel, impressive Gompas perched on soaring
hilltops, ancient buildings clinging to sheer rock walls and ridges that seem
to reach to the heavens, tower above vibrant green farm land in the valleys.
From the tops of the passes a panorama of jagged peaks disappear to the horizon.
In contrast, the Plains of Changthang the place of Nomads (Changpas) who grazed
their Yaks and Pashmina goats on the high pastures. It is punctuated by beautiful
lakes that are a heaven for wildlife in this desert in the mountains. But most
of all are delightful and friendly people and immensely colorful.
Traveling from Srinagar to Leh by road, the Islamic influence diminishes at Kargil and the region becomes predominantly Buddhist. The people follow TibetanTantric Buddhism which places much emphasis on magic and demons. All around Ladakh are Gompas the Buddhist monasteries that are always fascinating to visit.
In 1994 the government opened up four new attractive areas to foreign visitors,
Dha-Hanu in western Ladakh, Nubra Valley to the north of Leh, by the highest
road in the world. Pangong lake in the North Eastern side and Rupsho Valley
in the South west of Ladakh However a permit is required to visit these areas
which can be obtain from District Magistrate Leh through recognized local travel
Agent as we the Explore Himalayas does.
